SUMMARY : While filming a documentary about the textile industry in Louiseville, a small town in Quebec, a filmmaker and his crew meet Gina, a stripper who has come to fulfill a contract, and Dolorès, a young worker at the local textile mill. The director intends to denounce the workers' difficult working conditions. But he quickly attracts, just like Gina and Dolorès, the hostility of the authorities and part of the population, particularly a group of unemployed youths squatting on an abandoned ship. Assaulted and raped, Gina calls on criminals to take revenge on those who abused her.

ABOUT THE FILM : With GINA, Denys Arcand (THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE, JESUS OF MONTREAL) settles the score with the censorship he had suffered a few years earlier, following his documentary ON EST AU COTON (1970), rejected at the time by the NFB (National Film Board of Canada). But, in GINA, an explosive mix of "rape and revenge" and social drama, the director also condemns the blindness of men and the exploitation of women. Through this film, Denys Arcand shows the mechanisms of censorship, and how the oppressed masses in turn become oppressors.
