ABOUT THE FILM : So-called "mondo" films emerged in the late 1950s. Affiliated with exploitation cinema, they are characterized by a pseudo-documentary approach to the subject matter, seeking above all to shock the viewer. The most common themes are therefore related to sex and violence.
In this field, the two "masters" Gualtaro Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi left their mark on the genre with films such as Mondo cane (1962) and Africa addio (1966).
Filmed in Haiti in 1971 under the dictator François Duvalier, Les Négriers (Addio Zio Tom) is perhaps the most shocking of all the mondos made. Journalist Jacques Zimmer wrote in La Saison cinématographique 74: "Rarely has cinema gone further into the unbearable."
The Slave Traders, which deals with the slavery of Black people in the American South at the end of the 19th century, was confiscated in Italy upon its release, until 1972 when it was re-released in a censored version that had undergone extensive cuts that even affected its title: now Zio Tom.
